Driving green growth through advanced stainless steel recycling and sustainable manufacturing in Asia. Oryx Stainless strengthens the circular economy with low carbon footprint solutions in Malaysia.
Oryx Stainless Expands Asia’s Green Steel and Circular Economy Vision by Opening a Flagship Recycling Facility in Johor
The Netherlands-based Oryx Stainless Group, a world leader in stainless steel recycling, opened its newest, most advanced facility in Johor, Malaysia. This discovery represents a significant turning point in Asia’s transition to the circular economy and sustainable manufacturing. More than 200 dignitaries attended the grand opening, including representatives from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), international ambassadors, and Johor’s chief minister, Dato’ Onn Hafiz Bin Ghazi.
Oryx Stainless’s commitment to advanced recycling, environmental responsibility, and industrial progress is reflected in this facility. It places Johor in a strategic location near Asia’s production hubs for the processing of low-carbon stainless steel raw materials. The investment is in line with Malaysia’s industrial sustainability initiatives under the MADANI Government, according to MIDA CEO Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim. In addition to improving the nation’s manufacturing capacity, the new facility draws significant green investments and generates high-skilled employment possibilities.
An Advancement for Asia’s Green Steel
The Johor plant aims to recycle stainless steel and save around 1 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions yearly, supporting Malaysia’s carbon intensity reduction goals. Recycling can help achieve climate goals by replacing up to 90% of raw materials without sacrificing quality.
Oryx Stainless’s co-founder and chairman, Michael Pawlowski, highlighted that the company has refined this approach and that stainless steel is one of the few sectors with a recycling rate this high.
Low-Carbon, High-Tech Operations
The Johor plant has digital production processes and sophisticated material analysis equipment. It greatly reduces the demand for high-emission raw materials like ferronickel and ferrochrome by enabling the accurate blending of recycled inputs for more than 150 types of stainless steel alloys.
Developing Local Communities
Malaysian employees in Thailand have already received training from the facility to operate specialised machinery, such as the country’s first Sennebogen material handlers. By 2026, the workforce is predicted to double with a focus on local recruiting. Additionally, Oryx is collaborating with Malaysian academic institutions to train students for jobs in sustainable manufacturing and green technologies.
150,000 tonnes of stainless steel will be processed yearly by the facility’s first phase. Oryx Stainless’s investment demonstrates how industrial innovation may propel environmental and economic change throughout Southeast Asia.
