Jindal Stainless Doubles Slag Processing Capacity with New Wet Milling Plant in Odisha

Jindal Stainless, India’s largest stainless steel producer, reached a major sustainability milestone with a new wet milling plant at its Jajpur facility in Odisha. The new unit doubles the company’s slag processing capacity and creates 140 new jobs in the region.

The company partnered with Harsco Environmental, a global leader in metal industry solutions, to execute the project. Under a 15-year agreement, Jindal Stainless will invest US $150 million to build and operate the new plant. Moreover, the investment will help recover metal from industrial waste and strengthen circular economy operations for long-term environmental growth.

Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, Abhyuday Jindal, said the new facility will drive sustainable growth as the company expands to meet rising demand. He also stated that Jindal Stainless aims to grow responsibly and remain environmentally conscious. Additionally, he explained that the wet milling plant will utilise slag effectively and create new opportunities for the local community.

Meanwhile, Manjunath Raghavelu, Managing Director for India and MEA at Harsco Environmental, said Jajpur will become India’s first site with two wet milling plants. Furthermore, he noted that the partnership reinforces both companies’ shared commitment to circularity and sustainability in the steel industry.

This initiative also aligns with Jindal Stainless’ ESG roadmap and its long-term goal to achieve Net Zero by 2050. In FY25, the company reduced its carbon footprint by 14 per cent through several major green initiatives. These included India’s first green hydrogen plant for stainless steel production and the largest captive solar facility in Odisha.

Overall, the new plant marks another strategic step for Jindal Stainless as it scales operations across global markets. The company aims to raise its annual melt capacity to 4.2 million tonnes by FY27. With operations in 12 countries, it continues to strengthen its leadership in sustainable and responsible stainless steel production.
