Taiwan’s stainless steel imports and exports declined year on year during the first three quarters of 2026, while import and export prices rebounded, according to customs statistics.
Taiwan’s stainless steel imports totalled 813,818 tonnes during the first three quarters of 2026, marking an 11.8% decline compared with the corresponding period last year, despite a significant recovery in import prices.
Meanwhile, stainless steel exports fell 18.14% year on year to 621,419 tonnes, even as export prices continued to rise. In comparison, Taiwan’s stainless steel exports reached 831,908 tonnes during the first three quarters of 2025, recording a 9.8% year-on-year increase.
The latest figures indicate that Taiwan’s stainless steel imports and exports have declined for the second consecutive year, with exports experiencing a sharper contraction. Import and export prices, however, have reversed their previous downward trends, with import prices registering a more significant rebound.
The depreciation of the New Taiwan dollar may have increased import costs, while anti-dumping duties imposed by Taiwan on stainless steel products from Vietnam may have further dampened import demand. These factors may have contributed to the decline in import volumes.
On the export side, Taiwan’s stainless steel mills have continued to increase prices monthly since the beginning of 2026, driven by rising raw material and production costs.
However, demand has yet to recover significantly. Amid continued market uncertainty, participants have maintained relatively low inventory levels.
The contrasting movements in trade volumes and prices highlight the ongoing weakness in Taiwan’s stainless steel trade during the first three quarters of 2026.
