SUVs surge ahead: Driving the future of India’s automotive market

With an 11 per cent year-on-year growth, SUVs dominate the Indian auto landscape, capturing consumer interest and redefining market dynamics.

The Indian automotive market is witnessing a significant shift, with SUVs emerging as the preferred choice among consumers. This trend is highlighted by the latest report from CarDekho Group’s New Auto segment, which reveals a remarkable 11 per cent year-on-year growth in SUV sales from April to July 2024. This surge makes SUVs the only vehicle segment to achieve such a substantial increase, underscoring their growing dominance in the market.

The Rise of SUVs

SUVs have not only captured sales figures but have also become a central focus of consumer attention. By July 2024, SUVs accounted for an impressive 64 per cent of the segment’s traffic, reflecting their strong market presence and appeal. This preference shift is driven by evolving consumer demands for vehicles that combine functionality, safety and modern design.

One of the key factors behind the SUV boom is the innovative approach taken by automakers in vehicle design. The introduction of monocoque chassis has significantly improved the driving dynamics and safety of SUVs, making them more attractive to a broader audience. Additionally, enhanced features in compact SUVs, which offer the benefits of larger SUVs in a more affordable and manageable package, have contributed to their growing popularity.

The Decline of Hatchbacks

In contrast to the booming SUV segment, hatchbacks are experiencing a decline in sales. Despite accounting for 22 per cent of traffic, hatchbacks are struggling to convert interest into sales. This lag is indicative of changing consumer preferences, where the appeal of hatchbacks is waning in favour of the more versatile and feature-rich SUVs.

The Future of the Indian Automotive Market

Mayank Jain, CEO of New Auto, attributes the SUV surge to a combination of evolving consumer preferences and the narrowing price gap between hatchbacks and compact SUVs. As consumers continue to prioritise safety, comfort, and modern features, SUVs are expected to maintain their dominance in the market.

This trend is not just a passing phase but a reflection of a broader shift in the Indian automotive landscape. As the market continues to evolve, the focus will likely remain on SUVs, with automakers continuing to innovate and offer models that cater to the diverse needs of Indian consumers.

The Use of Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is used in various parts of an SUV, particularly where durability, corrosion resistance, and strength are critical. Key components made from stainless steel include:

1. Exhaust system: Mufflers, catalytic converters, and exhaust pipes are often made of stainless steel to resist corrosion from heat and exhaust gases.

2. Fuel tanks: Some SUVs use stainless steel for fuel tanks due to its resistance to corrosion and punctures.

3. Chassis and frame components: Certain structural parts may use stainless steel for added strength and rust resistance.

4. Engine components: Stainless steel is used in parts like valves, gaskets and heat shields to withstand high temperatures.

5. Trim and decorative elements: Exterior trim, grille and door handles are often made from stainless steel for its aesthetic appeal and durability.

6. Fasteners and brackets: Various screws, nuts, bolts and brackets are made from stainless steel to ensure long-lasting strength and resistance to corrosion.

7. Brake lines: Stainless steel brake lines offer superior resistance to corrosion compared to traditional steel.

8. Heat shields: Stainless steel is used to protect other components from engine and exhaust heat.

Conclusion

The rise of SUVs in the Indian automotive market marks a significant shift in consumer behaviour. With their blend of safety, style, and functionality, SUVs are poised to continue leading the market, leaving behind more traditional body types like hatchbacks. As the gap between different vehicle segments narrows, the dominance of SUVs is set to grow, reinforcing their position as the vehicle of choice for the modern Indian consumer.
