Outokumpu supports its customers’ green transition with verified environmental data – new stainless steel environmental product declarations published with lower carbon footprint.
Outokumpu is taking significant strides to support the green transition with products boasting up to 75 per cent lower carbon footprints than the global industry average, as per a company report. The company has recently released new environmental product declarations (EPDs) offering detailed, verified environmental data on its stainless steel.
These EPDs, covering austenitic, ferritic, and duplex stainless steel products, provide insights into various environmental impact indicators, including carbon emissions and resource usage. Outokumpu’s approach is built on comprehensive lifecycle analysis, spanning from raw material extraction to end-of-life recycling, ensuring transparency for its customers in industries like construction, energy and marine sectors.
In 2023, the company’s low-carbon stainless steel helped reduce global carbon emissions by an estimated 12 million tonnes compared to traditional materials, demonstrating its potential role in decarbonising the steel sector. The steel industry currently accounts for 10 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, and achieving a 90 per cent reduction by 2050 is seen as a critical step in meeting global climate goals.
Heidi Peltonen, Outokumpu’s Vice President for Sustainability, emphasised the importance of providing detailed data: “Our EPDs enhance transparency, enabling customers to make informed choices and reduce supply chain emissions. These declarations reflect Outokumpu’s commitment to delivering materials that meet growing demand for low-carbon solutions.”
The latest EPDs mark a milestone in Outokumpu’s sustainability efforts, offering more specific data than ever before and underscoring the company’s position as a pioneer in environmentally responsible steel manufacturing.
