Outokumpu and Alstom Collaborate to Provide Metro Cars with Low-Emission Stainless Steel

Outokumpu and Alstom join hands to support green public transport with low-emission stainless steel. This partnership helps reduce CO₂ emissions and supports Europe’s goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2050.

Alstom, a significant force in intelligent and sustainable mobility, has teamed up with Outokumpu, a world leader in sustainable stainless steel. Together, the newest model of Alstom’s Metropolis metro cars will be built with Outokumpu’s Circle Green® stainless steel. This special steel has a carbon footprint up to 93% lower than the global industry average.

The first delivery of Circle Green® steel is set for 2026. It will be used for the outer body of the new metro cars. This partnership supports both companies’ strong climate goals and aligns with the European Union’s mission to become climate-neutral by 2050.

Outokumpu Circle Green® is made using high scrap content and clean energy, making it one of the greenest stainless steel products in the world. In fact, its CO₂ emissions are as low as 0.5 kg per kg of steel, compared to the global average of 7 kg. More than 40 top businesses in Europe and Asia are already using it.

Rolf Schencking, President of Advanced Materials at Outokumpu, called the Alstom contract the company’s largest mobility-sector order. He emphasized that stainless steel is crucial for low-emission transport and future innovation.

Alstom, on its part, is working to cut emissions from its supply chain by 30% by 2030. This move to use low-carbon steel fits into its long-standing eco-design approach. Véronique Andriès, Alstom’s Sustainability and CSR Vice President, said this partnership will help significantly lower the carbon impact of its metro cars.

Outokumpu and Alstom’s collaboration demonstrates how industries may cooperate to further the green transition.
