Jindal Stainless Adds 2,000 Tonnes of Coin Blank Capacity as Global Stainless Steel Demand Diversifies

Jindal Stainless Adds 2,000 Tonnes of Coin Blank Capacity as Global Stainless Steel Demand Diversifies

Jindal Stainless is increasing its coin blank manufacturing capacity by 20% to 12,000 tonnes, highlighting the growing role of specialised stainless steel applications in expanding downstream demand and global market opportunities.

The growing use of stainless steel in specialised applications is opening new avenues for the metal industry, with Jindal Stainless’ decision to expand its coin blank capacity offering a case in point. The company plans to raise annual production at its Special Products Division in Hisar, Haryana, from 10,000 tonnes to 12,000 tonnes, a 20% increase driven by rising demand for non-paper currency across global markets.

For the stainless steel industry, the development is significant beyond the additional 2,000 tonnes of capacity. Coin manufacturing represents a high-value downstream application in which steel is supplied to international mints after being processed to precise requirements for diameter, thickness, shape and alloy composition.

Specialised Applications Expand the Stainless Steel Opportunity

Jindal Stainless has supplied coin blanks since 2001 and currently serves both Indian and international mints. Its overseas customers include mints in France, Finland, Poland, the Netherlands, the UK, Malaysia and Slovakia. The company expects further orders, including for denominations it does not currently manufacture, while also looking to enter additional markets.

The expansion illustrates how downstream applications can add depth to stainless steel consumption. Rather than competing only in conventional sectors, producers can tap specialised segments where material performance, consistency and precision are critical.

Jindal Stainless’ coin blank portfolio includes mono-metal, copper-based and bi-metallic blanks. Its products cover diameters of 12–30 mm and thicknesses of 0.85–2.5 mm, with production involving blanking, deburring, rimming, annealing, descaling, polishing and automated inspection.

Such applications also underline the importance of value-added processing within the stainless steel supply chain. Coin blanks require tight control over dimensions, surface finish, mechanical properties and weight, creating demand not merely for stainless steel but for specialised processing capabilities that can meet stringent minting specifications.

Global Demand Creates Export Potential

The company’s expansion is also aligned with an increasing focus on the environmental characteristics of stainless steel. Jindal Stainless has indicated that the lower carbon footprint associated with stainless steel manufacturing is contributing to demand from international customers.

This creates an opportunity for Indian stainless steel manufacturers to move further into global specialised-product markets. Supplying coin blanks to multiple national mints demonstrates how domestic processing capabilities can translate into export opportunities and integrate Indian stainless steel more closely with international manufacturing chains.

Moving Beyond Commodity Consumption

The coin blank expansion also reflects a broader shift towards value-added stainless steel products. Jindal Stainless’ Hisar Special Products Division manufactures coin blanks alongside precision strips and other specialised products. The company says its coin blank operations are designed to meet global minting standards, while its broader specialty-product portfolio targets high-end precision requirements.

For the wider stainless steel sector, developments such as this point towards the importance of diversification. Expanding into applications that demand tighter specifications can strengthen downstream consumption, improve the value captured from each tonne of material and create additional export-oriented opportunities.

With Jindal Stainless targeting new markets and additional coin denominations, the capacity increase could therefore serve as more than a production expansion. It signals the potential for specialised applications to become an increasingly important part of the stainless steel industry’s growth story, particularly as global customers look for durable, recyclable and technically consistent materials.
