The Indian Institute of Welding (IIW-India), Chennai Branch, is organising a two-day course on Stainless Steels and Associated Welding Technologies (SAWT-2026) on October 29 and 30, 2026, at Hotel Radha Regent in Arumbakkam, Chennai. The programme will run from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM on both days and feature sessions covering stainless steel metallurgy, welding processes, joining technologies, testing and quality assurance.
The course aims to address the engineering and manufacturing considerations associated with stainless steels, including their selection, processing, welding and performance. The programme will bring together speakers from research institutions, educational establishments and industry to deliver lectures across a range of technical areas.
The two-day programme features sessions on stainless steel applications, welding metallurgy, advanced joining processes and the selection of welding consumables. Other topics include welding processes for stainless steels, duplex and super duplex stainless steels, mechanical testing and evaluation of stainless steel welds, and quality assurance in stainless steel welding.
The programme also extends to specialised applications and associated engineering considerations. These include advances in joining stainless steels for vacuum applications, design perspectives for welding stainless steel components, environmental degradation and its prevention in stainless steel welds, and non-destructive testing of welded joints.
The scheduled speakers include Dr Hemant Kumar of IGCAR, Kalpakkam; Dr Murugaiyan Amirthalingam of IIT Madras; Prof. V. Balasubramanian of Annamalai University; Mr Hariganesh R of ADOR, Pune; Dr Harish Chandra Dey of IGCAR; and Prof. S. R. Koteswara Rao of Shiv Nadar University, Chennai.
The course is designed for engineers, shop-floor managers, supervisors and technicians, as well as professionals from the steel, automobile, fabrication, nuclear, power, aeronautical, space, defence, chemical, marine, and oil and gas industries. It is also relevant to those working in academic institutions and research organisations.
By covering material selection, welding processes, component design, testing and the prevention of environmental degradation in welded joints, the programme offers participants an opportunity to explore technical considerations relevant to their respective fields. The sessions can also help professionals broaden their understanding of stainless steel welding technologies and the quality and performance factors involved in welded components.
The Indian Institute of Welding is a professional body established on April 22, 1966, with its registered office in Kolkata. Its stated activities include promoting welding science and technology, professional education, research, certification and skill development.
The Chennai Branch was founded on January 17, 1973, and is identified in the brochure as the institute’s second branch. Its activities include technical programmes, seminars, conferences, workshops, technical lectures and certification courses.
Through SAWT-2026, the Chennai Branch is bringing together a broad range of subjects related to stainless steel joining and welding, with contributions from professionals representing research, education and industry.
