The Indian government has mandated the ISI mark for stainless steel and aluminium kitchen utensils, aiming to enhance consumer safety and product quality.
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), part of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, issued a Quality Control Order on March 14, requiring that stainless steel and aluminium kitchen utensils bear the ISI mark. This measure is intended to improve consumer safety and product quality.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) announced the mandate on Friday, emphasising that all stainless steel and aluminium kitchen utensils must adhere to national quality standards. The ISI mark, developed by BIS, guarantees the quality and safety of these products.
Per the BIS directive, the new order prohibits the manufacture, import, sale, distribution, storage or display of any stainless steel or aluminium utensils that do not carry the BIS standard mark. Non-compliance with this order will result in penalties, reflecting the government’s dedication to ensuring consumer safety and maintaining product standards.
This initiative follows BIS’s recent establishment of comprehensive standards for kitchen utensils, including IS 14756:2022 for stainless steel and IS 1660:2024 for aluminium utensils. These standards detail material requirements, design specifications, and performance criteria. The government believes this move will boost consumer confidence and encourage manufacturers to adopt best practices.
