Global Crude Stainless Steel Growth Defies Odds

Global crude stainless steel production climbed to 64.16 million tonnes in 2025, up 2.1 per cent from the previous year, according to the World Stainless Association. With Asia producing more than 55 million tonnes and China alone accounting for nearly two-thirds of global output, the industry continues to expand despite regional imbalances. What is driving this steady rise?

Asia leads the growth

Asia remained the centre of global crude stainless steel production in 2025. The region produced 55.31 million tonnes, marking a 2.7 per cent increase compared with 2024. Strong industrial activity, infrastructure investment and growing manufacturing demand supported the rise.

China led global output with 40.87 million tonnes, up 3.6 per cent year on year. This means China contributed 63.7 per cent of total global crude stainless steel production, underlining its dominance in raw material processing, melting capacity and finished stainless steel supply.

India also played an important role in the regional increase. India’s crude stainless steel production has been growing steadily, supported by railway expansion, urban development, water infrastructure projects and rising demand from the food processing and renewable energy sectors. Industry observers often describe India as one of the fastest growing stainless steel markets globally, with per capita consumption still below the world average, leaving room for further expansion.

Indonesia continued to strengthen its position as well, benefiting from its large nickel reserves, a key raw material in stainless steel production.

Mixed results elsewhere

Outside Asia, trends varied. The United States recorded a solid recovery in 2025, as improving industrial output and stable demand from automotive, construction and energy projects lifted crude stainless steel production.

In contrast, Europe experienced a decline. High energy prices, weaker manufacturing activity and ongoing economic pressures reduced production levels across several European countries. Producers in the region faced tighter margins and stronger competition from Asian exporters.

Why crude stainless steel matters

Crude stainless steel is the foundation for a wide range of finished products used in construction, transport, healthcare equipment, household appliances and clean energy systems. Its corrosion resistance, strength and recyclability make it a preferred material worldwide. Around 90 per cent of stainless steel can be recycled, supporting sustainability goals and circular economy efforts.

Industry experts say that long-term demand remains closely linked to infrastructure growth, industrialisation and green energy investment. With Asia, especially China and India, continuing to expand their industrial base, global crude stainless steel production is expected to remain resilient in the years ahead.
