The Indian stainless steel industry has urged the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) to impose anti-dumping duties on low-cost imports that are impacting local manufacturers, Jindal Stainless Managing Director Abhyuday Jindal has said in a conversation reported by PTI.
The Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA) has filed a petition with the DGTR. It is an apex authority for administering all trade remedial measures, including antidumping, countervailing duties and safeguard measures.
According to Jindal, as quoted, the industry submitted its application towards the end of June. The DGTR typically takes two to three months to begin an investigation.
Speaking about the global trade uncertainty caused by the US tariff moves, Jindal has emphasised, “For a very long time we have been suffering with substandard dumped material from countries like China, Vietnam, and Indonesia, and looking at now, absolutely, these trade uncertainties globally, it is definitely required to protect our borders and protect our homegrown companies.”
He has highlighted the current situation as urgent because this is where the growth is coming from. India is where the market is growing.
India’s stainless steel imports touched 1.73 million tonne in FY25. China, Indonesia, Vietnam and South Korea are the leading contributors, according to data from market research firm BigMint.
