BEML Ltd, Indian Navy to Boost Marine Engineering Capabilities

BEML Ltd and the Indian Navy have joined forces to enhance indigenous marine engineering, supporting India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative through the development of advanced marine applications for defence.

In a significant stride towards bolstering India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing, BEML Ltd, a leading defence and heavy engineering manufacturer, signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Directorate of Marine Engineering, Indian Navy. The MoU was formalised on August 20, 2024, at Naval Headquarters in Delhi, with key officials from both organisations, including Ajit Kumar Srivastav, Director of Defence, BEML, and Rear Admiral K Srinivas, ACOM (D&R) of the Indian Navy.

This collaboration marks a pivotal step in advancing the indigenous design, development, manufacture, testing, and product support of critical marine equipment and systems. Aligned with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, this partnership aims to reduce dependency on foreign imports by leveraging BEML’s expertise in heavy engineering, hydraulics, diesel engines and structural fabrication.

BEML’s commitment to delivering cost-effective, reliable, and enduring solutions will significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities. The strategic alliance is set to strengthen indigenous marine engineering, ensuring that both current and future naval projects benefit from state-of-the-art, domestically produced technology.

Shantanu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director, BEML Ltd, highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating that it will not only bolster India’s maritime defence capabilities but also contribute meaningfully to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The collaboration will focus on meeting immediate operational requirements while building a robust foundation for long-term defence infrastructure.

BEML’s dedicated Maritime Strategic Business Unit will spearhead this initiative, aligning with national projects like the Sagarmala Project and the Maritime Indian Vision 2030, thus reinforcing India’s position in the global maritime sector.
