
The Sabarmati High-Speed Rail Multimodal Hub in Ahmedabad is emerging as an important example of how stainless steel can combine architectural expression, durability and functionality in large-scale transport infrastructure.
An integral part of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, the hub has been designed to connect the Sabarmati railway stations, the upcoming Bullet Train station, the Metro and the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS). The facility includes passenger amenities, retail and commercial spaces, offices and a concourse with waiting areas and restaurants.
One of the defining features of the hub is its large stainless steel mural depicting the historic Dandi March. Installed on the building’s facade, the mural connects the contemporary transport infrastructure with Sabarmati’s place in India’s history.
The application also highlights the wider potential of stainless steel in public infrastructure. Its corrosion resistance, durability and relatively low maintenance requirements make it suitable for applications where long service life and consistent appearance are important. In projects exposed to varying environmental conditions and heavy public use, material selection can have a direct bearing on lifecycle performance.
For the stainless steel industry, such applications also demonstrate how the material is moving beyond conventional industrial and engineering uses into prominent architectural and infrastructure projects.
The hub incorporates several green-building features, including rooftop solar panels, landscaped terraces and gardens, energy-efficient lighting and electrical systems, water-efficient fixtures, rainwater management, waste segregation and enhanced natural lighting and ventilation. In January 2026, the facility received an IGBC Gold Rating, becoming the first building associated with India’s Bullet Train project to receive the certification.
The project therefore brings together multiple priorities relevant to modern infrastructure — connectivity, sustainability, design and long-term material performance.
For India’s stainless steel sector, the Sabarmati HSR Hub offers a visible example of the material’s expanding role in infrastructure. As the country invests in high-speed rail, urban mobility and multimodal transport systems, applications such as these could create further opportunities for stainless steel across architecture, transportation and public infrastructure.
