Taiwan’s Stainless Steel Market Grapples with Weak Demand Amid Global Uncertainty

For decades, Taiwan has been recognised as one of Asia’s most influential stainless steel manufacturing hubs, supported by world-class producers, advanced processing capabilities and a robust export ecosystem. Home to leading manufacturers such as Yieh United Steel Corporation (Yusco) and Tang Eng Iron Works, the country has built a strong reputation for supplying high-quality stainless steel products to industries ranging from construction and automotive to food processing, semiconductors and precision engineering. Taiwan also ranks among the world’s leading exporters of stainless steel flat products, with key export markets spanning the United States, Europe, Japan and Southeast Asia.

Yet, despite these strengths, the Taiwan stainless steel market is navigating one of its most challenging phases in recent years. A combination of weakening downstream demand, volatile raw material prices and heightened global competition has created an increasingly cautious business environment, forcing both producers and buyers to rethink their market strategies.

Demand Slows While Market Fundamentals Remain Strong

The first half of 2026 saw Taiwanese mills implement multiple price hikes in response to soaring nickel costs. Yusco raised prices of its 304 stainless steel products by NT$5,000 per tonne at the beginning of the year, while 316L products increased by NT$1,000 per tonne. As nickel prices on the London Metal Exchange climbed above US$18,700 per tonne, producers attempted further price revisions in the following months, with proposed increases of up to NT$7,000 per tonne for selected grades.

However, the momentum proved short-lived. While raw material costs remained elevated, downstream demand failed to keep pace. Buyers across construction, machinery, industrial fabrication and manufacturing adopted a cautious, hand-to-mouth purchasing strategy, limiting procurement to immediate requirements instead of building inventories. Service centres and distributors found it increasingly difficult to pass on higher costs, resulting in slower transactions and growing price resistance across the supply chain.

The changing market dynamics are reflected in the financial performance of Taiwan’s leading producers. Yusco reported first-half 2026 revenue of approximately NT$18.85 billion, broadly flat year-on-year, while Tang Eng posted NT$5.29 billion, representing a modest 3.03% increase over the same period. Although these figures indicate operational resilience, they also underscore the industry’s struggle to convert higher selling prices into stronger growth amid subdued demand.

Taiwan’s export-oriented stainless steel sector is simultaneously facing mounting pressure from lower-cost producers in China and Indonesia, whose competitive pricing continues to reshape global trade flows. While Taiwanese manufacturers retain an edge through superior product quality, advanced processing capabilities and consistent supply reliability, pricing has become the decisive factor for many international buyers. In addition, evolving trade regulations and sustainability requirements, including carbon-related measures in key export markets, are adding further complexity to global business conditions.

Despite the near-term headwinds, the long-term outlook remains positive. Taiwan’s stainless steel industry continues to invest in higher-value products, operational efficiency and specialised grades for renewable energy, semiconductor manufacturing, medical equipment and electric vehicle applications. As global industrial activity gradually improves and demand stabilises, Taiwan’s strong manufacturing base, technological expertise and export competitiveness are expected to reinforce its position as one of Asia’s most important stainless steel producers.

For now, however, the Taiwan stainless steel market remains in a period of transition: balancing resilient production with cautious demand, volatile raw material prices and an increasingly competitive global landscape.
