Revolutionizing Solar Energy Infrastructure with Laser-Welded Stainless Steel Beams

Montanstahl’s precision-engineered stainless steel beams provided a durable, corrosion-resistant solution for supporting solar panels in Chile’s harsh Atacama Desert.

The Atacama Desert in Chile, known as one of the driest and sunniest places on Earth, is now a hub for solar energy innovation. To tap into its abundant sunlight, an ambitious project is under construction—a vast field of solar panels designed to provide sustainable energy. But this pioneering initiative required a framework that could endure extreme environmental conditions while ensuring the stability of cutting-edge solar technology.

The Challenge

The harsh desert conditions presented unique challenges for the structural framework. The project required materials that could resist corrosion, offer long-lasting durability, and ensure precision engineering. Montanstahl was tasked with producing 67 tons of stainless steel IPE profiles that met rigorous ASTM A1069 standards, using high-grade materials compliant with ASTM A240. Beyond material quality, the solution needed full laser weld penetration, sharp-edge precision, and a specific surface finish to achieve optimal corrosion resistance and structural integrity.

The Solution

Montanstahl delivered a tailored solution with 347H stainless steel, renowned for its high resistance to corrosion and elevated temperature performance. The team produced:

  • 104 bars of 9500 mm and 106 bars of 9700 mm, each with full laser weld penetration and sharp-edged profiles for optimal assembly.
  • Surface treatment involved shot blasting and pickling to achieve a roughness of Ra 3-5μ, enhancing the beams’ corrosion resistance and durability.

Precision laser welding technology ensured not only full weld penetration but also precise machining, meeting the exact specifications required by the project. The result was a robust framework capable of supporting solar panels in one of the world’s most extreme climates.

Impact

Montanstahl’s stainless steel profiles are now key components in a groundbreaking renewable energy project. The innovative design and material quality ensure that the solar panels will operate reliably for years, even under the Atacama Desert’s intense sunlight and challenging conditions.

Montanstahl is proud to contribute to a sustainable future by enabling the harnessing of solar energy in one of the most demanding environments on the planet.
