SAIL, PT Krakatau Steel Sign JV to Set Up 500 KTPA Stainless Steel Slab Plant in Indonesia

Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) has signed a joint venture agreement with Indonesia’s PT Krakatau Steel to establish a 500,000-tonnes-per-annum (500 KTPA) stainless steel slab manufacturing facility in Indonesia, marking a significant milestone in India’s overseas steel expansion strategy and strengthening industrial cooperation between the two countries.

The proposed facility will focus on the production of stainless steel slabs to cater to growing demand in Indonesia and the broader ASEAN region. The project is expected to support sectors such as infrastructure, construction, automotive, consumer goods and industrial manufacturing, where stainless steel consumption continues to rise across Southeast Asia.

The joint venture is being viewed as a strategic move for SAIL as it seeks to expand its presence in value-added steel products and secure access to raw materials critical for stainless steel production. Indonesia is one of the world’s largest producers of nickel, a key input in stainless steel manufacturing, and the location is expected to provide the venture with long-term supply chain advantages.

Industry observers noted that the project aligns with the broader efforts of India and Indonesia to deepen cooperation in steel, critical minerals and manufacturing. The partnership is expected to enhance regional supply chain resilience and improve market access for stainless steel products within ASEAN, one of the fastest-growing industrial regions globally.

For PT Krakatau Steel, the collaboration brings additional technical and operational strength through SAIL’s experience in integrated steelmaking and stainless steel production. The Indonesian steelmaker has been focusing on expanding its downstream capabilities and strengthening its position in the regional steel market.

The 500 KTPA capacity plant is expected to produce stainless steel slabs that can be further processed into a range of flat stainless steel products for industrial and commercial applications. The facility will also support local manufacturing ecosystems and is expected to contribute to employment generation and industrial development in Indonesia.

Analysts believe the venture could help both companies tap into increasing stainless steel demand across ASEAN, where investments in transportation, urban infrastructure, energy and manufacturing are driving consumption. Establishing production closer to end markets is also expected to reduce logistics costs and improve delivery timelines.

While financial details and project timelines have not been officially disclosed, the agreement signals a long-term commitment by both companies to develop stainless steel manufacturing capabilities in Indonesia and strengthen regional steel supply chains.

The SAIL–PT Krakatau Steel partnership is expected to become one of the notable cross-border collaborations in the stainless steel sector, reflecting the growing importance of regional manufacturing partnerships in Asia’s evolving steel industry.
