SAIL bids goodbye to its trailblazing Chairman, Amarendu Prakash

With deep respect and gratitude, the steel industry bids farewell to Amarendu Prakash, CMD and Chairman of SAIL, whose leadership has driven the company to record achievements in production, modernisation, and strategic growth. His guidance has strengthened Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) as a cornerstone of India’s steel sector, leaving a lasting legacy for the future.

Prakash’s journey shows that vision, dedication, and skill can transform not just a company but the sector it serves.

A career built on steel and innovation

Amarendu Prakash began his career at SAIL in 1991, starting in the Rolling Mills at Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL). A B.Tech in Metallurgy from BIT Sindri, he spent over 28 years in steel production, mastering the craft of rolling and finishing. His leadership ensured timely upgrades of Hot Strip Mills in 1997 and 2007, introduced ERP systems, achieved Six Sigma certification, and established a technology hub to support research and patents, including a notable patent on reheating furnace design.

As a key member of the production and sales planning team, he focused on optimising product mixes, analysing market trends, and maximising revenue. He also pioneered the business analytics division to identify investment needs and customise production strategies based on market demand.

Global experience and national recognition

Prakash’s expertise extended beyond India. He travelled to Germany, France, Italy, and South Korea, gaining insights that strengthened SAIL’s steel manufacturing technology. During his tenure in the Chairman’s office, he helped formulate and implement key strategic decisions, turning the company from three consecutive years of losses into profit by FY19.

He also led SAIL teams to national and Asian business simulation championships, representing India at global contests. In recognition of his leadership and innovation, he received SAIL’s prestigious Jawahar Award in 1999 for the best young manager.

SAIL thanks Prakash for his invaluable contributions and wishes him health, happiness, and success in all future endeavours. His legacy of innovation, strategic thinking, and commitment to excellence will continue to inspire the steel sector.
