An Indian specialty and stainless steel manufacturer, Mukand Limited, has secured Green Steel certification, underlining its progress in lower-emission steel production. The recognition covers multiple product categories with strong star ratings.
As global industries push to decarbonise, could such certifications become a decisive factor for steel buyers and infrastructure projects seeking cleaner materials?
The certification recognises Mukand’s Black Bars with a 5-Star rating, while its Wire Rods and Bright Bars achieved a 4-Star rating. The assessment follows the Ministry of Steel’s Green Steel Taxonomy, introduced in December 2024, which classifies steel based on carbon dioxide emissions during production.
Under the framework, steel emitting 1.6 tonnes of CO₂ or less per tonne of finished steel qualifies for a 5-Star rating. Emissions between 1.6 and 2 tonnes earn 4 Stars, while higher bands receive lower ratings. The system aims to bring transparency and consistency to environmental performance across India’s steel sector.
An independent audit verified Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions, plant energy use and production data at Mukand’s Thane facility in Maharashtra. The process involved detailed scrutiny of operational and sustainability metrics.
Mukand has strengthened its sustainability strategy through energy-efficient processes, responsible resource management and cleaner production methods. During the reported period, roughly 58 per cent of the plant’s electricity demand was met through renewable sources.
The company is working towards a full transition to renewable power using a hybrid solar-wind model. Alongside this shift, it continues to implement energy-efficiency measures designed to optimise consumption and reduce the overall carbon footprint of its steelmaking operations.
Stainless steel plays a critical role in sustainable manufacturing due to its durability, corrosion resistance and recyclability. Longer service life and lower maintenance needs often translate into reduced lifecycle emissions, making stainless steel increasingly attractive for infrastructure, mobility and industrial applications.
Company representatives described the certification as a meaningful step in their long-term sustainability journey, emphasising continued investment in cleaner technologies and responsible manufacturing practices. The recognition further positions Mukand as a producer aligning product quality with environmental performance, as customers and regulators place greater weight on low-carbon materials.
